Ken Ishii/Koji Morimoto - "Extra"

Ishii Extra screen captureThe video for Ishii's techno song "Extra," which includes copious amounts of blood and cartoon violence, won the best dance music video at MTV Europe 1995.

Urmmm...yeah. I would find it profoundly unnerving to dance while watching the various cybernetic executions that pepper the image flow, executions that seem to derive their layouts from the nastier parts of human war.

On the other hand, the flying cyberbike and the various scenes of future tech are good eye candy.

I have no idea what the statement is that the director, Morimoto, wants to make with the video, but I feel distinctly unsettled.  Perhaps something about the exposure to violence in a technological age. You can try to figure it out for yourself.  Morimoto, makes sure to feed your madness by offering up concept sketches.  Perhaps the hints of meaning are there.

Your brain hurts because it has just been reprogrammed.
