Broken Bells - The Ghost Inside
In a cramped and cold transport vessel deep in space, a beautiful woman dreams about her destination. She is on her way to a resort world where she will become a star, pampered and famous in a sci-fi Hollywood.
But she’s out of money and expensive problems are getting in the way of her dream.
The Ghost Inside is a haunting indie electro-pop ode to people who sell pieces of themselves on the road to achieving their dreams. It shows a great deal of pathos and blurring lines of humanity.
Jacob Gentry directs this stellar music video. His previous claim to fame is directing a segment of sci-fi horror film The Signal, and recently the TV movie My Super Psycho Sweet 16 a title so horrible I cringe. Both have been panned by critics, but his work on this sci-fi vignette is above par.
The story is simple, but tight. The video is helped greatly by the acting. Mad Men's Christina Hendricks strikes touching emotional chords , and is well cast for the role. She is no stranger to science fiction. Joss Whedon cast Christina as a recurring character in Firefly as Mal's ex-wife.
The music of Broken Bells is created by Danger Mouse and James Mercer from the Shins. They do a fantastic job of blending Mercer’s lilting, falsetto voice with ethereal electronic pings and strong chords on a piano. They do a neat cameo appearance in the video as...well, that would be telling.
Enjoy.
